Lutheran Care Ministry

LUTHERAN CARE MINISTRY

Lutheran Care Ministry was a partnership of the Synod of Alberta and the Territories, Rev. Peter Chau (retired, Calgary), several congregations and the leadership of the Southwestern Area, and Campus Ministry – UofC.  It was formed in response to an ever-increasing number of international immigrant families, many fleeing uncertain situations, and with little preparation or support.  This included a large influx of students attending universities and other post-secondary institutions in Calgary. The mandate was to exemplify  care, compassion, and love for those we encounter in our daily activities and in our community.

In addition to orientation and welcome programs, academic and personal counseling offered by the institutions, this ministry provided:

  • Workshops on Canadian culture and values, study skills and strategies, housing, accessing  health care, taxes and tax benefits and stress management.
  • Discussion sessions led by precedent students (mostly from Hong Kong) to share their  experiences and success stories.
  • Social networking sessions for faith communities and social services agencies in Calgary.

This ministry is welcoming volunteers and donations as it begins ministry with and among those arriving from Hong Kong.
